TinyMe 2008.0 Reviews

“Hello fellow geekers, it’s time for another distro review…For a while now, I have made it clear that the Linux distro to win my notoriously cold heart is Linux Mint, the distro widely claimed as “Ubuntu done right.” This is still true! But of course, I am the type that is never satisfied with my lot in life, so the search goes on for the “perfect” Linux distro. Especially at the times like these when my CPU fan never shuts off, getting louder and louder lol…Linux Mint is a tad hard on my memory, to be sure. As soon as this “economic incentive” check from the IRS gets here, I plan on buying a 2GB DDR kit…until then..I like to check out the distros that are ideal for “legacy machines.” The latest one I downloaded (last night) is a little derivative of PCLinuxOS, called TinyMe.”

Review: TinyMe 2008

“About a year ago we reviewed TinyMe when it was still in its beta and test stage. But a lot has happened in the past year, and all of it good. But what makes it so good? Well, in addition to fixing all the bugs and little quirks, TinyMe has become more stable and loads faster than it was in the early days.”

TinyMe instilled new life to my HP Deskpro

“In my backyard that old HP Deskpro is still there. Decades back it came with windows 98 preinstalled. Then the time changed, so did computing. I could never get satisfactory performance out of this old box from on top of Windows 2000 or XP. I had installed GoblinX and AntiX; and it worked decently. But the latest TinyMe 2008 final really instilled life to it.”

Review: Lightweight Linux distributions

“Years ago I already played a bit with Linux (It was Redhat 5.0 on my 386). At that time I thought the operating system wasn't yet ready for the desktop and after a while I reinstalled Windows. Things changed when Ubuntu 5.04 was released. This was the first time I really enjoyed Linux; the most important things worked, it was easy and it was just great!

Because I liked Ubuntu so much, I decided to install it on my laptop too and also this worked very good. However, these days Ubuntu is way to heavy to run on my laptop. Because I wanted to have a fast system I tried to install Gentoo Linux; the installation took 3 days but I ended up with a very fast and responsible system. However, every time I had to install a program it took ages to compile the software. So then I started searching to a nice and user-friendly lightweight distribution.

It wasn't as easy as I thought, so I decided to write my experiences down in this review. The following distributions were tested:”

A Tiny Look at TinyMe 2008.0

“While we're all waiting for PCLOS 2008 to be released, we were treated to a kissing cousin yesterday with the release of TinyMe 2008.0. It's a small lightweight distro featuring the LXDE desktop with lots of handy apps. I thought I'd take it for a little test run this evening to see what it might be like.”

TinyMe 2008 Small but Robust

“I am PCLinuxOS KDE fan, I like slim and customized installation and desktop.

Openbox is a small and configurable windows manager. TinyMe has adopted this small and fast windows manager.

I have been closely following this nicely crafted distribution since its version 6b. Versiob 2008 was released yesterday and I immediately downloaded and isnatlled it.”
